1  DIZE AMOR

Dize Amor que fiz eu
Qual será o meu delicto,
Por que dejezas só verme
Sempre triste, sempre afflicto.

Eu que sempre respetei,
O teu poder teo braço invicto,
Sou condemnado a viver
Sempre triste, sempre afflicto.

Ah! cruel não me abandones,
Neste terrivel comflicto;
Tem compaixão de quem vive
Sempre triste, sempre afflicto.

Say, Love, what did I do to you,
What is my crime,
Why do you only wish to see me
Always sad, always distressed?

I who always respected you,
Your power, your invincible arm,
Am condemned to live
Always sad, always distressed.

Oh cruel one, do not abandon me
In this terrible conflict.
Have compassion for the one who lives
Always sad, always distressed.

2  POR TI AMADO

Por ti amado presava a vida
De estar comtigo tinha sabor;
Tu me deixaste, tudo aborreço,
Só me alegrava com teu amor.

Para encantar-te dava-me Apolo
Todos os dias raro valor;
Tu me deixaste, perdi o estra,
Era o meu genio o teu amor.

Quando me amavas, dos infelizes
Vedava o pranto do dissabor;
Tu me deixaste, sou insensivel,
Era virtuozo com teu amor.

For you, my love, I enjoyed life,
Being with you my senses were alive;
You left me, everything annoys me,
Only your love brought me happiness.

Every day Apollo gave me
Special skills to enchant you;
You left me, I lost my artistic inspiration,
My genius depended on your love.

When you loved me,
Even the unhappy held back their tears;
You left me, I am empty,
With your love I could do anything.

3  JÁ PODES, MONSTRO INHUMANO

Já podes, monstro inhumano
De traições hoje fartarte.
O Deos de amor abjurei,
Só vivo para odiar-te.

Houve tempo, em que almejava
Sempre existir para amar-te;
Agora a sorte mudou-se:
Só vivo para odiar-te.

Eu não sei, como a ternura
Em mim teve alguma parte:
Desconheco a humanidade;
Só vivo para odiar-te.

Now, inhuman monster,
You have had your fill of unfaithfulness.
I renounce the God of love,
I only live to hate you.

There was a time when I wished
To exist forever to love you.
Now fate has changed me:
I only live to hate you.

I do not know how tenderness
Was ever a part of me.
I do not recognise humanity;
I only live to hate you.

4  ERVA MIMOZA DO CAMPO

Erva mimoza do campo,
Tu és o retrato meo,
Se a vida perdes em breve
Eu sigo o destino teo.

Eu na série dos humanos,
Tu no Reino vegetal,
Ambos sofremos o golpe                               Q’extingue o triste mortal.

Mas na perde d’existencia
Tu és inda fortunoza,
Tu não conservas, não guardas
Terna paixão amoroza.

Eu na série dos humanos,
Tu no Reino vegetal,
Ambos sofremos o golpe
Q’extingue o triste mortal.

Ai de mim que a eternidade
D’esta alma qu’adora, Armia,
Não socumba, não acaba
Debaixo da Campa fria.

Eu na série dos humanos,
Tu no Reino vegetal,
Ambos sofremos o golpe
Q’extingue o triste mortal.

Lovely grass of the field,
You are my portrait.
If you lose your life soon
I will follow your destiny.

I in the kingdom of mankind,
You in the realm of plants,
We both suffer the wound that
Extinguishes the sad mortal.

Yet when you cease to exist
You are still fortunate,
You do not keep inside you
Tender passionate love.

I in the kingdom of mankind,
You in the realm of plants,
We both suffer the wound that
Extinguishes the sad mortal.

Alas! that the eternity
Of the soul that adores you, Armia,
Does not end
Beneath the cold grave.

I in the kingdom of mankind,
You in the realm of plants,
We both suffer the wound that
Extinguishes the sad mortal.

5  A NOIVA DO SEPULCRO  (UMA CRUZ E BRANCA PEDRA)

 Uma cruz e branca Pedra
Eis a sua sepultura,
Ah por minha desventura
Aqui jaz silencio amor;
Minhas lagrimas sómente
Denunciem minha dor.

Infeliz!...Elle saudoso
O prazo dado aguardava;
Sente passos...me julgava,
Mas o fere vil traidor!!!
O cruel, podeste tanto?
Como he dura a minha dor.

Tosca cruz...Pedra sagrada,
Recebei meu triste pranto!
Recebei em penhor tanto
Minha dêstra, e meu amor!
Oh console este consorcio
Da saudade a minha dor!

A cross and a white stone...
Behold his tomb.
Oh for my misfortune
Here lie silence and love.
Only my tears
Reveal my sorrow.

Unhappy one!... He waited full of longing
Till the appointed time;
He heard footsteps... he thought it was me,
But he was wounded by the vile traitor!
Oh cruel one, how could you do this?
How hard is my pain.

Rough cross...sacred stone,
Please accept my sad weeping!
Accept as my pledge my right hand
And my love!
Oh may this union
Ease the pain of my longing!

6  EM QUALQUER PARTE QUE ESTEJA

Em qualquer parte que esteja
Eu sem ti não posso estar,
Nada do mundo me interessa,
Vivo só para te amar

Os dias da minha vida
Só tu podes prolongar,
Teu amor me faz ditozo,
Vivo só para te amar.

Wherever I am,
I cannot be without you,
Nothing in the world interests me,
I live only to love you.

Only you can prolong
The days of my life,
Your love brings me happiness,
I live only to love you.

7  MEUS SUSPIROS, MEUS LAMENTOS

Meus suspiros, meus lamentos
Vagando não sei por onde,
Nem de Marcia são ouvidos,
Nem hum écho me responde.

My sighs, my laments
Wander I know not where.
Neither by Marcia are they heard,
Nor does an echo answer me.

8  SE TE ADORO E TE PREFIRO

Se te adoro e te prefiro
A tudo q’o mundo tem,
Por que me maltratas, Lilia,
Em que te offendi, meu bem?

Oh Lilia meu ser cançado
Já a vida mal sustem,
Morrerei se não declaras
Em que te offendi, meu bem?

Tionio, se amar hé crime,
Cometido hum crime tem,
Mas se amor não hé delicto
Em que te offendi, meu bem?

If I adore you and prefer you
To everything in the world,
Why do you mistreat me, Lilia?
How did I offend you, my love?

Oh Lilia, my tired being
Can hardly sustain life.
I will die if you do not declare
How I offended you, my love.

If loving is a crime
By Tionio a crime has been committed.
But if loving is not an offence
How did I offend you, my love?

9  CUPIDO TIRANDO DOS HOMBROS

Cupido tirando
Dos hombros a aljava,
Num campo de flores,
Contente brincava,

E o corpo tenrinho
Depois enfadado,
Incauto reclina
Na relva do prado.

Marilia formosa
Que ao Deos conhecia,
Occulta espreitava
Quanto elle fazia;
Mal julga que dorme
Se chega contente,

As armas lhe furta
E o Deos não senta.
Acorda Cupido
E a cauza sabendo,

A quantos insultão
Responde dizendo,
Temieis as settas
Nas minhas maos cruas,
Vereis o que podem
Agora nas suas.

Cupid taking the quiver
From his shoulders
Happily played
In a field of flowers.

Then the soft young body
Began to tire.
Foolishly he lies down
On the grass of the meadow.

Beautiful Marilia,
Who knew the God,
Spied on him from afar.
As soon as she thinks
He is sleeping,
She approaches happily.

She steals the weapons
And the God does not notice her.
Cupid awakes and knows
What has happened.

He answers those
Who accuse him, saying,
You feared the arrows
In my young hands,
Now see what they can do
In hers.

10  A PALMEIRA  (SÓ TU ESCUTAS)

 Só tu escutas meu pranto,
Ó encanto, ó selvainteira,
Ó palmeira que tão só fazes
Dó nesta ribeira.

 Sou qual hes triste, palmeira
Na ribeira, tão sozinho,
Passarinho sou perdido
E corrido de seu ninho

Quando te affaga uma aragem
Es imagem de saudade;
E invade um teu respiro
Do retiro a soledade.

Adeos, tristonha ribeira,
E palmeira tão frondosa;
Que amorosa nesta calma
Sinto a alma mais saudosa.

You alone hear my weeping,
Oh enchanted wilderness,
Oh palm tree so lonely,
I pity you here by this stream.

 I like you am sad,
Palm tree by the stream so lonely.
I am like a lost little bird,
Driven out of its nest.

When a breeze caresses you,
You are the image of longing;
And this breath invades
The solitude of your retreat.

Farewell, sad stream,
And palm tree so abundant.
You are so lovely in this peace
That I feel my soul’s longing all the more.

11  LISONGEIRA DOCE ESPERANÇA

 Lisongeira doce esperança
De meo coração fugiste,
Sem defesa ao mal sujeita
Porque deixas uma triste.

 Aparte as sombrias nuvens
Que me inpedem ver os Céos,
Ah! venhão tuas imagens
Alegrar os olhos meos.

 A noite foge d’Aurora,
Cede o inverno a primavera,
Mas meo triste coração
O teu socorro inda espera.

 Se a mais amarga dor
Eu me vejo succumbir,
Minhas lagrimas detem
Que estão quaze a cahir.

Sweet flattering hope,
You fled from my heart,
I am defenceless against evil things,
Because you leave me so sad.

Above me the dark clouds
Keep me from seeing the sky.
Ah! let your image come to me,
To bring joy to my eyes.

Night flees from dawn,
Winter gives way to Spring,
But my sad heart
Still waits for your rescue.

  If I see myself succumbing
To the bitterest sorrow,
I hold back my tears
That are almost falling.

12  DEU SIGNAL A CAMPA TRISTE

Deu signal a campa triste
De que hé mort’a minha amada.
Justos Céos, porque dilatas
Minha vida desgraçada.
Se já não vive a minh’amante,
Viver não quero mais hum instante.

The sad grave is the proof
That my beloved is dead.
Oh just Heavens,
Why do you extend my unfortunate life?
If my lover no longer lives,
I do not want to live one more instant.

13  DELIRO E SUSPIRO

Deliro, e sospiro,
Por quem me despreza,
Que foge de verme
Com tanta fereza.

Amor hé suave
Lei da Natureza;
Mas tu lhe rezistes
Com tanta fereza.

I am delirious and I sigh,
For the one who despises me,
The one who flees from seeing me
With such ferocity.

Love is Nature’s
Gentle law,
But you resist it
With such ferocity.

14  NASCE AMOR DA SYMPATHIA

Obrigar a que nos amem
Hé dos loucos pretenção.
Nasce amor da simpathia
Hé liberto o coração.

Que eu só ame a quem ama
is o que ordena a razão,
Mas responde a natureza
Hé liberto o coração.

Se hé certo que amor póde
Escravizar a razão,
A não ser d’amor escravo
Hé liberto o coração.

To force anyone to love us
Is the ambition of a fool.
Love is born of affection,
The heart is free.

Reason commands that I only love
Those who love me.
But nature responds,
The heart is free.

If it is true that love
Can ensnare reason,
Unless it is a slave of love
The heart is free.
