Hamburg 1705

Michele Benuzzi - harpsichord

In the year 1705, at the Opera House in Hamburg, Handel was working as a violinist, Mattheson as a composer and tenor, and Graupner as a harpsichordist. There was a firm friendship between the first two composers: in1703, Handel had moved from Halle to Hamburg to seek his fortune as a musician, and it was Mattheson who presented him at the theatre and introduced him into the musical circles of the city. Graupner moved from Leipzig to Hamburg in 1705, and for three years was harpsichordist at the theatre. We know nothing of the relationship between him and the other two, but it appears that they worked together before Handel moved to Italy in 1706. What unites the three composers is the predominance in their harpsichord music of the suite or partita.
